Hey there! If you’ve landed on this post, then you’re looking for gifts for people learning French! I’ve been learning French on Duolingo for the last couple of years (taking breaks, trying other platforms, etc), and today I’ve shared 21 gifts that I would love to receive as a French learner!
This post is all about gifts for people learning French.
Gifts for People Learning French
I visited France in 2016, and I’m currently planning a trip for two weeks to the South of France with one of my besties! (We may add in a week for Paris!)
I’ve been learning Duolingo slowly (but surely!) on Duolingo for a few years now, and as French learner I have a TON of ideas for gifts for people learning French.
For my gift guide, I tried to keep my guide to useful ways to help your Francophile (lover of French) learn French, as well as gifts that I have my eye on to learn more about French culture. For this post, I stayed away from corny or cheesy gifts (ex: t-shirts with the word “J’aime” or “Bonjour.”) No hate on these gifts, they’re just a bit more obvious.
In THIS post, I’ve shared unique gift ideas, some unusual gifts, as well as a couple to make you laugh out loud. I hope my experience as a French learner helps you find the PERFECT gift or gifts for people learning French!
Allons-y!
#1 Gifts for People Learning French: France – Culture Smart | Modern French Culture Info
Ok, this next gift for people learning French is incredibly useful. I personally love the Culture Smart series, as this series covers MODERN culture in countries across the globe. I’ve learned so much reading these books, and I’ve found that there are just not that many resources for learning about modern French culture.
Sure, there are a TON of books on French history and art (so many French art books!), but as someone who wants to visit different places and avoid being “That American,” I have really appreciated this series. To be 100% upfront, I haven’t read the guide focused on France, but I have read about a dozen books on other countries from Culture Smart.
Side note: The books are written by British nationals, so British cultural values, pre-conceived notions, ideas on colonialism, etc, can enter the books. But, if your French learner will read with an understanding of the author, I think they’ll learn a lot!

#2 Gifts for People Learning French: French Baking Kit
This next gift for people learning French is so fun! This is a great gift for a couple who is learning French together, or a family!
From the brand: “Give a fun new guided experience. This kit has all the baking tools and accessories that make excellent baking gifts!”
#3 Gifts for People Learning French: Travel Flips
Ok, this next gift for people learning French is actually on my birthday/Christmas list (I’m a December baby!), and I’m so excited to try these.
Like many people learning a new language, I learn through repetition and drills. I love these French flash cards because 1) the design is GORGEOUS (seriously, why are so many French charts and flash cards so… UGLY) 2) They’re tactile! Your language learner likely uses their phone a LOT when practicing French, and it’s good to get out of their head and seeing something different. Plus, these flashcards can be used when your French learner is traveling or commuting to work by train, without draining their phone’s battery!

#4 Gifts for People Learning French: Duolingo Gift Card
Ok, first up on my list of gifts for people learning French is to gift them a Duolingo gift card.
Buuuuut Duolingo doesn’t actually *offer* giftcards. Short of registering their email and paying for a gift card (that sounds complicated), what you can do instead is snag the super adorable Duolingo plushie, and include a card with ~ $85 USD for the Duolingo annual fee!
Now, the Duolingo annual fee can actually be as low as $60 if the person registers their new year offer (I paid about that in 2022), but I don’t know what the 2023 offer will be! Better safe than sorry on this!

#5 Gifts for People Learning French: French Fridge Magnets
This next gift for people learning French is a bit more silly, so this is a great gift for someone with a sense of humor!
You may have seen the little word magnets people use to leave funny poems, haikus and messages to their housemates and loved ones.
So what if you could do it in FRENCH?! How fun would that be?! I personally love these fridge magnets because they have the English translation on the back. Learning through play is such a great way to learn French, and your recipient will be delighted to have such a fun and thoughtful gift!
#6 Gifts for People Learning French: Airbnb Gift Card
Now, a great gift for people learning French is an Airbnb giftcard!
I know you may be raising your eyebrows at your screen right now, because some people think gift cards are a not-so-thoughtful gift. I couldn’t agree more!
An Airbnb gift card is a great gift for people learning French, because chances are they’re planning a trip to France (or other French-speaking country). An Airbnb gift card shows that you support their dreams and are super excited for them! A gift card puts *them* in the driver’s seat (they get to pick their dates, the city and neighborhood they want to stay in, etc). If I received an Airbnb gift card, I’d likely think of the person who gave me that gift the WHOLE TIME I was in France! I really think this is such a thoughtful gift.

#7 Gifts for People Learning French: Type E Adapter for Traveling to France
Now, let’s talk about a useful gift for people learning French! If your francophile plans on going to France in the near future, they’re going to need a power adapter.
People traveling from the USA to France will need a Type E adapter! When I first went to France, I made the mistake of only packing one adapter, aaaand I had multiple things that needed to be plugged in at the same time. My bestie had issues with her adapter, so we had to trek to find her a new one.

#8 Gifts for People Learning French: French Gourmet Snack Mix
This next gift for people learning French is wonderful, because it’s what we in the biz call a “consummable gift.” If your French learner lives in an apartment or already has a LOT of “French stuff” (they’re more than a bit of a Francophile), then buying a gift they can consume (and not worry about storing) is the way to go!
From the seller: “Each Item in this Box is guaranteed to be made in France to give you a truly authentic tasting experience!”

#9 Gifts for People Learning French: French Coloring Book
If your French learner loves adult coloring books, then they’ll likely appreciate this gift for French learners! This coloring book has 100+ pages full of vocabulary!
From the reviews, it looks like the French word is not paired with the image (it’s on a separate page), which is a bummer! I think that this could still be a good gift for French language learners, but you definitely want to read the reviews to determine if THIS gift for French learners is a good fit for YOUR French student! <3

#10 Gifts for People Learning French: French Culture Coloring Book
I am intrigued by this next gift for French learners from Jordan Patrick, buuut I wasn’t able to find images of what’s inside of this book.
From the description: “French culture coloring book for adults, full of detailed French Culture Illustrations with 50 Pages of Iconic French Landmarks, Landscapes, Food, Wine, and Culture! Perfect for learning about life in France while being creative with your coloring styles. This book makes for a great gift for a relative or someone you know who LOVES FRENCH CULTURE!”

#11 Gifts for People Learning French: Paris Travel Poster
Following the coloring books for French learners, I wanted to offer a more traditional gift for people learning French.
These prints (each image is clickable) are lovely wall prints for the Francophile, and they fit in with a variety of home decor aesthetics. They bring a feeling of France without being super cringe-y, in my opinion!

#12 Gifts for People Learning French: France Sweatshirt
Ok, this next gift for people learning French was a BIT of a struggle for me to put together. I wanted gifts that people would actually WEAR, vs sweatshirts with sayings like “Wine o’clock” on them. I thought that this array of gifts for people learning French showed a nice variety, while also noting current fashion trends!

#13 Gifts for People Learning French: 6 Months of French Pantry Subscription
How fun is this gift for people learning FRENCH!?!? It used to be that one would have to go to specific restaurants or study French cookbooks to try cuisine, but now Williams Sonoma will bring a taste of French cuisine to your French lover’s door — every month for 6 months!
From the brand: “Explore the flavors of France with three months of our premium pantry essentials. From sea salt harvested on the Atlantic coast to classic demi-glace, stock and braising bases, these are the ingredients that no French kitchen can do without. Perfect for preparing traditional French dishes and hearty family meals, they’ll also add delicious depth to your favorite savory recipes.”

#14 Gifts for People Learning French: Mastering the Art of French Cooking
Finding the Williams Sonoma subscription made me think of the classic Julia Child cookbooks on French cooking, so I knew I had to include this boxed set as the PERFECT gift for people learning French — who also love cooking! Altogether, these cookbooks feature 781 recipes!
From the description: “Taken together, these two books are a stunning feat of cookbook literature, and Julia Child’s most beloved works.”

#15 Gifts for People Learning French: French Magazine Subscription
Something I think many a French language learning program forgets or neglects is utilizing current culture, as well as personal hobbies and interests, to learn a language!
For instance, I’ll bet that if your French learner loves Architectural Digest and home decor, they’d love a subscription to FRENCH Architectural Digest. Same with GQ, and many other popular magazines — including National Geographic.
One can best learn new vocabulary, in my experience, if it relates to their current interests!
I’ve selected a few of my fave magazines below, and you can also search for your own on Amazon!

#16 Gifts for People Learning French: French Streaming Service
Ok, I haven’t pulled the trigger on this next gift for people learning French — but I am INTRIGUED! Lingopie is a streaming service that offers popular TV shows in FRENCH. For whatever fascinating reason, I’ve found a good number of TV shows and movies on streaming platforms don’t have the show in French (although subtitles are often available).
My friend Florencia, who lives in Argentina, once told me that many of her Argentine friends first began to learn English by watching popular TV shows, like Friends, in English!
Your French learner can do the same, but in reverse, watching their favorite TV shows (ideally shows they’ve seen a BUNCH of times) in French. Context and knowledge of the story will likely help them learn new vocabulary, as well as get used to many different voices speaking the language.

#17 Gifts for People Learning French: French Striped Shirt
Ok, I debated whether or note to include this gift for people learning French, but, oh well, I’m going to do it! This classic shirt with horizontal stripes is a classic wardrobe staple for sophisticated dressers, and is a shirt hanging in many a Francophile’s closet.

#18 Gifts for People Learning French: French Pastry Class – MasterClass
This next gift for people learning French is ALSO a great gift for people who love to learn in general — a Masterclass subscription.
I reviewed Masterclass myself here, and I really love this platform. I’m not SUPER into cooking or baking, so I haven’t taken the Dominique Ansel class — but this could be a great gift for someone who loves French cooking, is learning French — and also has a thirst for knowledge ++ a lover of learning from experts in general.

#19 Gifts for People Learning French: Mon carnet de croquis poche
This next gift for people learning French is also for the French student who is known for their love of moleskines and notebooks in general! “Mon carnet de croquis poche” can be translated as “My pocket sketchbook,” and these lovely sketchbooks have both graph paper and unlined paper for your Francophile. This is truly a delightful gift for the French learner who includes writing, sketching, etc, as well as the French learner who would love a dedicated notebook or planner to keep track of their journey to learn French!

#20 Gifts for People Learning French: Paris Walking Guide
I am very intrigued by this next gift for people learning French. My first time to Paris, I realized that the city truly was built for walking, and I missed a good amount taking taxis to most places (although, I did have a blast in those French cabs!).
This book guides the visitor through Paris, as an official walking guide!
From the description: “Charmingly illustrated throughout, this practical guide will transport readers to the delightful sites and discoveries of Paris. Vibrant watercolors illustrate destinations including architectural marvels, gardens, historical highlights, cultural hubs, markets, food and wine favorites, and lots of little “je ne sais quoi’s” that make Paris so magical.”

#21 Gifts for People Learning French: Hermès French Scarf
This last gift for people learning French is by far the priciest, but I did want to include it! If your Francophile has a love of fashion, gifting them a French scarf may be a wonderful idea. One of the most classic French scarves is one from French luxury design house, Hermès.
For your first purchase, I definitely recommend going directly through the Hermès website!
If you’re not sure on color or style, this could be a gift that you discuss beforehand.
