Hello hello!

My article on the lack of diversity shown in sewing machine company campaigns has been seeing a resurgence, so I wanted to pop in with 11+ Black and African American sewing content creators. While we need to hold companies accountable, we should also be celebrating and uplifting Black creators in this space!

Black Sewing Blogger #1: Aaronica of The Needle & The Belle

Aaronica is one of my fave humans on planet earth, and I love her posts about slow fashion and reading her reviews of indie pattern designers! Aaronica is also really great with knits and stretch fabrics.

From Aaronica: “My mom gifted me my first sewing machine at 13 along with 1 set of sewing lessons that I took with my neighbor. We made these super lame drawstring bags and I was over sewing before I’d really given it a chance. When I was in my first marriage, I think my mom saw that it was getting ready to end so she gifted me with yet another sewing machine so that I could have a hobby that was just mine. As a plus size woman struggling with finding clothes that I loved, I was ready to rock this sewing thing out–until I saw the directions for what was supposed to be a simple dress.”

Mac is a self-taught sewist and working mom in the Washington DC area! I love her use of head wraps!!

M O T H E R ’ S?D A Y?2020 – Last summer, I had an AWFUL commute to pick up my 2 kids (often arriving JUST before closing). It took 1-1.5 MISERABLE hours in DC traffic. But, I knew I didn’t want to have that negativity impact how I interacted with my kids when I saw them. So instead, I turned it into an opportunity to make memories! I started asking one of my kids’ teachers to take a “family photo” each day of us at pickup and ended up with the fun set of photos you see here. Not only did my kids come to expect (and eventually enjoy them, lol) but the TEACHERS got excited about having the chance to capture these fun shots for us! The pictures reminded me to reflect back on the day with the right reframe: I don’t “have” to drive that long to pick my kids up… Instead, I “get” to drive and pick up my children. As with all things – I think it’s truly about perspective; I see today (and this time) that way too. – I have always known it takes a village to raise a child – but this Mother’s Day I truly feel the absence of all those mothers, grandmothers, “school” mothers (teachers) “aunties” (friends, family), and all the others who parent our children in wide range of ways. I truly wish we didn’t have to celebrate under these socially isolated circumstances… – However, I still have a wish for you today. To all the women who have never given birth (by choice or circumstance), to those who have given birth (to live babies, angels and rainbows), to those who are currently pregnant or praying to be so, to those adoptive parents, guardians, grandparents, stepmoms, aunties and to those who have outlived their own children – Happy Mother’s Day from me and my crew. You matter in the lives of so many – and your contributions are seen and appreciated. – ? Fun Fact: I’m wearing handmade clothes in every photo! ? #memademay2020 #memadeeveryday #isewmyclothes

I finished my @issarae @cosmopolitan dress on Saturday and I’m in love. The moment I saw it (and y’all should cop the magazine be cause Issa’s whole spread is amazing) I knew I needed a version of it! I didn’t want to copy the designer’s work so I self drafted the sleeves in a way that would create a similar effect to the original designer’s but still different. I also mixed patterns because y’all know that’s my signature. Notice the border hem of the dress matches the big sleeve ❤️Instead of doing big and small polka dots (see previous post) used a golden yellow symphony broadcloth from @joann_stores, a linen polka dot print from @joann_stores, and an Ankara fabric I used to make a client’s headwrap for @shopjacintagreen. Other than some corona pounds around my waistline (?????) I love the way it came out! I’ll provide more sewing details tomorrow ❤️. @embraceblackculture how about a sewing post? By the way, I used a @mccallpatterncompany pattern from my birth year, 1986. Perfect brunch dress when it’s safe to do so again (maybe August?). #sewing #sewersofinstagram #sewcolorful #sewfreshsewclean13 #polkadots #sew #sewingproject #bgm #memade #memadewardrobe #vintagestyle #megantheestallion #melaninpoppin #savage #savagechallenge #savageremix #savageremixchallenge #mccalls #mccallspatterns #weekendproject #sew #offtheshoulder #offtheshoulderdress #minidress #dramaticsleeves #1980sfashion #happymonday #cosmopolitan #selfdrafted #minidress #80saesthetic
